A Right to Migrate?

Listen Later

Contributor(s): Professor Chris Bertram, Emily Dugan, Professor Matthew Gibney, Madeleine Sumption | Most people would agree that we have a right to leave our country of origin. But since leaving one country usually means arriving in another, do we also have a right to immigrate? If so, how can this be reconciled with a state’s apparent right to exclude? We bring together a panel of philosophers and migration experts to discuss these and related questions. Chris Bertram (@crookedfootball) is Professor of Social and Political Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, University of Bristol. Emily Dugan (@emilydugan) is Social Affairs Editor at the Independent, i and the Independent on Sunday. Emily first book, Finding Home: The Real Stories of Migrant Britain was published in July 2015 with Icon Books. Matthew Gibney is Professor of Politics and Forced Migration at the University of Oxford. Madeleine Sumption (@M_Sumption) is Director of the Migration Observatory. Peter Dennis is LSE Fellow in the Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method and Forum for European Philosophy Fellow. The Forum for European Philosophy (@ForumPhilosophy) is an educational charity that organises a full and varied programme of philosophy and interdisciplinary events in the UK.
