This passage is the genealogy of Jesus Christ, as presented by Luke. This sermon seeks to explain the differences between Matthew's genealogy and Luke's genealogy. It also shows the unique theology of Luke's genealogy. The purpose of Luke is not to give a mere chronology, but show forth Jesus Christ as the great Messianic Savior of the entire human race. He traces the genealogy back to Adam, indicating that those who are found in Adam receive Adam's inheritance - death. But those who are found in Christ -the greater Adam, and better Son of God- receive Christ's inheritance - eternal life.
