They have a thriving business already and what's more, her beau, Jake Bennett, has just proposed. Her life is perfect as it is - why would she throw everything away to risk traveling to the other end of the country?
However, Lydia's world is blown apart by the arrival of a mysterious stranger, Silas Jones. Who is he and what does he want with Lydia's fiance? Fortune Out West is a series of romantic novels set in the Californian Gold Rush of the mid-19th century. A Rush of Gold to the Head
Four and a half stars.
Lydia Collins had almost given up on finding a husband. In her late twenties, she runs a boarding house with her aunt in NYC. So she is ecstatic when Jake, her beau of three months, proposes to her, and promises her a life of luxury.
But things turn haywire when Silas, a rude boarding guest, claims he recognizes Jake. Silas insists that Jake isn't who he says he is, and Silas warns Lydia to stay away from him. But who should Lydia believe? Her fiance, the man she's in love with, or the asinine boarding guest?
This is the first book in a series of five novellas. It was very good, and packed a lot into the sixty short pages. The ending was so emotional and touching that I was almost brought to tears. Other than a few typos, it was an excellent read. It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger, so unless you plan on reading all five books in the series, I don't think I'd recommend reading this as a stand alone. You're going to want to find out what happens next.
Overall, a very promising start to the series. I have a feeling I will be enjoying the next four books. Highly recommend!
To the author, I wish the book cover made it clear that this is Book 1 in the series. It took me a while to figure out which of the five books I downloaded to read first.
Rush of Gold I enjoyed this book
Rush of Gold I enjoyed this book. It kept my interest because it was not repetitive. Hemley is an author that I will remember to read.
