Welcome to Episode 15 of A Seat At The Table with Spare Ribs Club!
In this podcast series, creator of Spare Ribs Club Alex Holker talks to guests about their dream feminist dinner party. From their 3 feminist guests, the 3 tunes that will be on repeat all evening, and the 3 courses being served, this podcast brings together conversations around feminism, female friendship and food.
In this episode, Alex talks to Elizabeth Fremantle. Elizabeth is the critically acclaimed author of seven novels. Her latest, Disobedient, focuses on the life of artist Artemisia Gentileschi. Her first novel, Queen's Gambit, about Katherine Parr, Henry VIII’s last queen, has been adapted for the screen as Firebrand, starring Alicia Vikander and Jude Law, which premiered at Cannes in May. All her work seeks to revisit the lives of remarkable women who have been forgotten or misrepresented by history.
We discuss Elizabeth's dream feminist dinner party, starting with a great guest list of young icons; 19th century novelist Mary Shelley, Italian Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi, and contemporary actor Emma D’Arcy. Set in an imagined paradise against a background of Donna Summer Sisters, Annie Lennox and Eric Satie, they start with cold cucumber soup, followed by pad thai, finishing with mochi and shots of flavoured vodka. We discuss Elizabeth's prolific career, the inspiration behind her novels, and how her own personal feminism affects her work.
