Welcome to A Seat At The Table with Spare Ribs Club!
In this podcast, creator of Spare Ribs Club Alex Holker talks to guests about their dream feminist dinner party. From their 3 feminist guests, the 3 tunes that will be on repeat all evening, and the 3 courses being served, this podcast brings together conversations around feminism, music and food.
In this episode, Alex talks to Yulin Kuang. Yulin is an LA-based award-winning screenwriter and director. She was born in Guangzhou, China and quickly uprooted first to the flat plains of Wichita, Kansas and then to various suburbs of New Jersey, where she wrote a lot of Harry Potter fanfiction and became obsessed with telling kissing stories. She is currently adapting and directing Emily Henry’s novel, Beach Read, for 20th Century. She previously also adapted Henry’s People We Meet On Vacation for Temple Hill and 3000 Pictures. Yulin’s own debut novel, How to End a Love Story, will be published in April 2024 through Avon.
We discuss Yulin's dream feminist dinner party, starting with a fabulous guest list; journalist and writer Nora Ephron, director and playwright Celine Song, and novelist Elizabeth Gaskell. Set against a soundtrack of Rex Orange County, Billy Joel and The Highwomen, they start with a cucumber salad and a Los Feliz Iced Tea from Home on Hillhurst, which features a chai-infused scotch component, followed by Chrissy Teigen's Spicy Miso Carbonara, paired with the Francis Coppola 2020 Claret, and Prantl's Burnt Almond Torte, which was her wedding cake, served with decaf coffee. We discuss how her feminism intersects with her writing and the romance genre, and her past and current projects.
