Publisher's Summary:
How do you thwart well meaning, but relentless, matchmaking parents without getting caught?
Abby's perfect solution was to try too hard to chase down and please her equally reluctant counterpart, the new vicar of Midland. Lord Edwin Chappell was certainly startled by her performance but too smart to be taken in by Abby's act. Just as she was showing him that she was anything but the perfect vicar's wife, he was trying to prove that her idea of a vicar was quite as far fetched.
After a humorous battle of wits and wills between the young couple, tragic events lead the matchmaking parents to stand against the match just when Abby and Edwin are falling in love. Now, the couple must decide to obey the time-honored dictates of their respective families or follow the path they believe God has now chosen for them.

Great Read
Everyone believes that Abby and Edwin's marriage is sensible, everyone except Abby and Edwin.
Abby lives in the shadow of her younger sister, Constance. Though both women are reasonably attractive, Abby is very shy and has never been very popular with the young men of her village. In contrast, Constance is flirtatious and the center of attention wherever she goes. Abby's mother decides that Abby will never find a husband on her own, so she arranges a match with Edwin, the son of an old friend. Abby is mortified at the thought of having an arranged marriage and decides she won't have to marry Edwin if he never proposes. She endeavors to drive Edwin away, but isn't entirely successful.
Edwin, as the youngest son, won't inherit the family estate, but will serve as a vicar in a country church. Since he is to take over the church in Abby's village, his mother decides a marriage with Abby will be perfect. Like Abby, Edwin isn't thrilled with the prospect of an arranged marriage, but he agrees to at least meet Abby. When Abby and Edwin meet, neither are what the other expected. As they spend more time together, they find they have more in common then they first imagined. Just as they begin to fall in love, tragedy strikes both families in very different ways. Will Abby and Edwin trust in God's plan for them, or will they let pride tear them apart forever?
Abby is a wonderful heroine. As the older daughter, Abby is torn between fulfilling her own wishes, living up to her parents' expectations, and discerning God's plan for her life. If that weren't enough, she also feels responsible for her younger sister and tries hard to set a good example. While Abby isn't facing a war or anything on such a large scale, her problems are very real. I feel that Abby's struggle to balance all the facets of her life and solve her everyday problems make her a very relatable character. Abby was also a very shy woman, but this should not be mistaken for weakness. Though Abby is awkward in social situations, she displays enormous amounts of courage and strength when the people she loves need her.
Edwin is a very solid hero. Like Abby, he is loyal to his friends and family. Though his family decided that he was to become a vicar, he genuinely feels that he has a calling to serve God in that way. He isn't simply looking for a comfortable situation. His desire to do God's work is sincere. Though Edwin is eager to serve God, he isn't so eager to marry Abby as everyone seems to expect.
