Undoubtedly it was a musician who noted that while there is no preaching in heaven, there will be singing. Thus, musicians will always have a job but not preachers. Indeed, John Wesley was the chief Methodist preacher, but we are still singing the songs of his brother, Charles. Music profoundly touches us. We are “what we think.” We are “what we eat.” We are “what our friends are.” I would also argue we are “what we sing.” Before David was king, he played the harp for his mentally troubled predecessor (1 Samuel 16:23). African-Americans developed spirituals to comfort and provide hope. Some stroke victims who are limited in speech can still sing (our “Aphasia” choir was created for some of these). The deeply troubled Psalmist wrote in 77:6, “I remembered my songs in the night.”
