No two career paths are the same, but there are similarities in how workers advance in the sports industry. One of the most observable trends is that to move up in the field, you frequently have to move away from your location. That’s been the case with several guests of the WorkInSports Podcast, including James Price (now Oklahoma City Thunder Director of Social Media), New England Patriots’ Producer/Reporter Tamara Brown, and Tennessee Titans’ Stadium Experience Manager Sam Fischer. On this episode, VP of Content and Engaged Learning Brian Clapp chats with McCullers Sports Group Founder/Principal Mark McCullers, who relocated often to progress in his career. After beginning his career as a Sales Executive at CBM Computer, McCullers transitioned into the sports industry where he spent eight years as an Assistant Stadium Manager for the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission. He then became the General Manager of Columbus Crew Stadium and began climbing the ranks with the Crew organization, eventually becoming the team’s President and General Manager. He and Clapp discuss:

• How McCullers sees a potential recession affecting the sports industry based on his experience with the Crew during the 2008 recession • How McCullers’ first sports opportunity at DC Sports and Entertainment laid the foundation for his rise through the sports industry • Why McCullers launched the McCullers Sports Group and the value of sports startups
