This is a Spotlight on the Scriptures. Philippians 3:10. (Part 1) that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, Paul said that I may know him.
The Webster's Dictionary says that to Know is to perceive with certainty; to understand clearly; and to have a clear and sure insight into truth, fact, or anything that exists. Which includes all doubt or uncertainty of its existence. Listen, we know what we see with our eyes, we know what hear with our ears, we know what we taste with our mouths. We know that fire and water are different substances. We know that truth and falsehood express ideas which is incompatible with each other. We know that a circle is not a square. That I may know him - That I may be fully familiar with his nature, his character, his work, and with the salvation which he has worked out. The goal of the Christian life is to know Christ and to be like Him. Listen Jesus said the same thing when He prayed, “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3). Christianity is primarily a growing relationship with the infinite God who has revealed Himself through the Lord Jesus Christ. Your introduction to the Lord Jesus may have been far different than Paul’s. My introduction may be a lot different from yours. You may have met Christ as a young child, reared in a Christian home. Or, you may have met Him later in life. It may have been a disturbing situation, where in a moment of crisis you called out to Him and were saved. It may have been less dramatic so you can’t even recall the exact time or place. But one thing is sure: If you are truly a Christian, today you know Jesus Christ personally. You don’t just know about Him; you don’t just know facts, you just don’t know verses in the Bible, but you know Him. You can say with Paul that He is “Christ Jesus my Lord.” Listen beloved, it is one thing to stand on the shore and see the great waves and see the effects of a strong wind blowing and say, “There is a storm”; it is a truly different thing to be out in the middle of the Sea, in those waves, and being tossed every way by them, and fighting for your life. Listen on the shore you know of them; but in their substance you know them, you know their power. The first one is information, the second one is experience.
That I may know him”—Paul at the end of his life still had the desire to know Christ. Today some saints give the impression that they have complete knowledge and they only need to read a verse every morning to keep the devil away and are ready to take off at any moment. Yet Paul, the greatest missionary the world has ever seen, said at the end of his life, “My ambition is still to know Christ—His person and the power of His resurrection.”
The older I get, the greater comfort in my life is the reality of Christ. When I see death and decay all around me, I need the reality of Christ in my life— I want to know Him, do you? When we are going through a rough time in this life, remember that Jesus Christ invites us, to get to KNOW HIM, better through it. Listen, Saints, Jesus will hurt with you, He will cry with you, he will walk with you, and He will talk with you, and believe me when I say this, you will get to understand him better in the process. Suffering is a call for us to have a deeper relationship with Jesus. This is a Spotlight on the Scriptures.
