Pt. 5 – A Steward Let's God Use their Gifts

By Louie Marsh, 2-11-2024

1) I can't be a good steward and IGNORE my gifts.

"10As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: (1 Peter 4:10 ESV)

· This doesn't mean I use all of them all the TIME.

"15But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, 16was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone; 17nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus." (Galatians 1:15–17, ESV)

· But when I'm called, I GO!

"8And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Then I said, "Here I am! Send me." 9And he said, "Go, and say to this people: (Isaiah 6:8–9a, ESV)

2) A Good Steward REJECTS…

· PERSONAL exaltation.

"17Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit." (James 5:17–18, ESV)

"Oh wow brother - you must really pray alot!" "My, you must sure be spiritual!"

· GIFT exaltation.

"17If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, yet one body." (1 Corinthians 12:17–20, ESV)

Whether it's tongues, teaching or whatever…it's wrong!

· Gift DELUSION

"3For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned…6Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;" (Romans 12:3–6, ESV)

· The wrong MOTIVATIONS for using my gifts.

"15Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing, 16but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet's madness." (2 Peter 2:15–16, ESV)

3) A good Steward EMBRACES…

· Using my gifts to SERVE others.

"7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good." (1 Corinthians 12:7, ESV)

· Using my gifts to GLORIFY God.

11whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen." (1 Peter 4:10–11, ESV)

· Using my gifts when I don't WANT TOO.

"1Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2"Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you." 3So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord."… (Jonah 3:1–3a, ESV)
