Gordan writes, "If scientific rationality and its product of truth is no longer a guide to belief and action what basis can psychiatry claim as its datum of sanity from which to measure variation and deviation? I will suggest in todays story that science and rationality can provide factual but not moral truth. Further science, rationality and the democracy that they promote are new to human civilization and constantly under attack by superstition, magical thinking and authoritarian tribalism. Finally psychiatry and the entire mental health industry justify theri exostence by a myth of mental illness which is neither scientific nor demcratic.
