Publisher's Summary:
A deadly secret in a suitcase full of stolen gold leads to a series of unexplainable murders while the FBI hunts for a top foreign killer spy. The story starts in Latvia, near Riga, during the final days of the Second World War. A young boy, Ben Kalninsh, searches an abandoned coal mine tunnel for stolen guns the soldiers hid inside. Unfortunately for him, he meets an AWOL Soviet Army officer on the run instead. The officer is involved in a theft of a large amount of gold from one of his superiors and had it hidden inside the same tunnel. Unknown to him, one of the valises holds also a diary with top Soviet secrets related to espionage in the US. And so, by entering the tunnel, Ben sets into motion deadly events which will follow him into his adult life.
Years later, in Minnesota, his father is gunned down. And no one knows why. FBI agents approach Ben with the news of the murder of his father. Special Agent Miriam Dokes and Agent Book are assigned to the case, which includes the torture and murder of his father's doctor friend, Karlis Goulbis.
The FBI manager, Bob Sawyer, has a hunch there's something much more valuable than the stolen gold. Due to so many secret projects and so many years gone by, the affair becomes the proverbial search for a "needle in a haystack". In order to find the answers, Ben, the principal character, needs to go back to Switzerland, to a bank where the gold is hidden. And, from there on, Death stalks Ben and all other participants in the gold heist. Nemesis provides the denouement of the story.
Nemesis is the second part of A Suitcase Mystery, it's denouement.

Big Screen-Style Excitement!
I donât remember how this book ended up on my Kindle but Iâm so glad I read it! If you like excitement, mystery and adventure youâll find all that here and more. If you enjoy intrigue, espionage, blackmail and murder splashed with something along the lines of the new film--The Imitation Game-- youâll love reading A Suitcase Mystery. The story begins in Latvia with two suitcases and a missing diary. The war's over but the country is still in turmoil and Ben is only an innocent boy. The diary is extremely important to the Russians and they want it back. Spring ahead to the U.S. where a veterinarian is dead and detective Dokes wants to find out what happened. Of course the FBI is involved and the story swirls deeper and deeper into more plot twisting action than a six-foot pole dancer auditioning for the circus. Can Ben and his mother run from their past? Meanwhile, agents Sawyer, Books and John Holt are all over the place trying to solve everything but youâll keep reading just to find out what happens with Berg, his fur business and what about that diary? Why did the limo get hit? Will they be able to decipher what they need and what happens when they do?
IT DID NOT EXCITE ME
This was not the kind of novel that made me hesitate to put down the book. The writing was fair and the plot predictable.
Thought-provoking
A Suitcase Mystery seemed more like a series rather than a novel title but as I read, I better understood Stevens' choice. The book unfolds gradually and with great intensity, suspense and intrigue.
