Chapter 18 reveals that joy is not optional—it is imperative for those running to win. True joy flows from union with Christ, not from favorable circumstances, soulish exuberance, or personal success. Jesus Himself endured the cross “for the joy set before Him,” keeping His eyes on the goal rather than the pathway.

From past joy in the assurance of sins forgiven, to present joy in abiding fellowship, to future joy in anticipating God’s eternal purposes, joy is the mark of a mature runner in the race. The lesson is clear: joy is not something we chase—it takes hold of us when our lives are under one single control, aligned with God’s ultimate intention.

When our perspective shifts from what happens to us to what God does through us, joy becomes a constant companion, sustaining us in every season and empowering us to finish well.
