Hannah Ennis is a life-long kitchen witch and practitioner of the Old Ways—the paganism of pre-Christian Ireland. Living in the small New Hampshire town of Harper’s Grove, Hannah’s mundane life of running her own new age shop, crafting herbal cures for the locals, and dealing with
her sister’s never-ending stream of delinquent boyfriends, has her stuck in a rut.
When rumors of people going missing and claims of vengeful spirits showing up every night begin to circulate around town, half the town blames Hannah because she’s a witch, while the other half secretly seeks her help.
With the help of her sister, an old love, and an ambitious journalist, Hannah finds that sinister forces are indeed at work and may just be targeting her! An old love returning to town to reconcile with Hannah, and perhaps rekindle their relationship, complicates matters for both Hannah's investigation and her old love's career.
Samhain, when the Veil between our world and that of the spirits is thinnest, is fast approaching, and Hannah must find a way to repair the tear in the Veil and return the spirits to the Beyond before the passing of Samhain makes the hole permanent. Hannah finds herself faced with the
choice of delving into forbidden magic which would save the town and damn her soul, or doing nothing, damning the town and all who live in it, including her returned love.
A Tear in the Veil has the folksy magic and strong feminine ties of Practical Magic meeting the metaphysical of the Odd Thomas and Harry Dresden books. It explores sibling relationships, feminism, how family legacies carry on through generations, pain of parental loss never leaving,
