Jerome Burnel was once a hero. He intervened to prevent multiple killings and in doing so damned himself. His life was torn apart. He was imprisoned, brutalized.
But in his final days, with the hunters circling, he tells his story to private detective Charlie Parker. He speaks of the girl who was marked for death but was saved; of the ones who tormented him and an entity that hides in a ruined stockade.
Parker is not like other men. He died and was reborn. He is ready to wage war. Now he will descend upon a strange, isolated community called the Cut and face down a force of men who rule by terror, intimidation and murder. All in the name of the being they serve. All in the name of the Dead King.

If you haven't read Charlie Parker books you don't know what you're missing! Can't wait for the next one!
John Connolly at his best
I have been a fan of John Connolly since I read his first book. His Charlie Parker novels never fail to keep your interest with interesting plots, believable characters and fascinating background information. They are crime fiction at its best and I love the darker elements which are strung through the plots. This latest book does not disappoint and upholds the tradition of the series. I would recommend this book to anyone (along with the rest of the series) who likes a good well thought out and well written book, which keeps you on the edge of your seat, and just when you think you have things sorted, twists and gets you going again. This is an exceptional book, in an exceptional series.
Great thriller!
Back on form with the latest Charlie Parker installment, good story & well rounded characters - awful though most of them are. Glad that the supernatural element is back (The Black Angel is one of the scariest books I've read(after Every Dead Thing of course)) and looks like Sam is shaping up to be the scariest new member of the team, a feat in itself!
Dull delivery
The storyline was good, but the narrator didnt do it much justice, especially in the first few chapters. His voice was quite monotonous and I almost gave up on the book because I couldnt get engaged with the story at all, and only continued to the end because the story got a bit more interesting. There was no passion in his voice and I wouldnt rush to listen to anything read by Jeff Harding again.
AUTHOR OF THE YEAR
Connolly's tongue in cheek but very descriptive prose is fantastic and paired with Jeff Harding's narration, all the Charlie Parker books are a super listen.
