How do you balance studio time with the business side and being an artist?
I am still in search of it at this point. I think that is the hardest part of all of what I do because it is my hobby, my work, and my volunteering, and it’s all in one and I don’t know how to untangle that.
What role has the community studio played in developing you as an artist?
I think it has been really inspiring seeing people create in so many different ways. At our studio we all throw on the wheel so we are all making round forms and there are just so many ways how to make that form yours. And that has been really inspiring to see.
Have you ever had any dry spells where you don’t know what to make?
No. I mean, I have a growing list of somewhere around 150 ideas of what I want to do next. So if I am ever not sure what I want to do I just open that note for myself.
Is there a new skill that you have learned recently in ceramics that you are really happy that you now have part of your repertoire?
Probably, but I am not sure what this is. I was recently very happy about some unlocked layering techniques. And that is so nuanced for myself. Some parts of layering just started to click with me more, which now creates more depth and I have been really happy with that.
What is a skill that you see other people doing that you would like to have?
Big sculptures, and also the space to create them.
What is one thing that you are making right now that’s got you super excited?
I have been making a bunch of these raccoon mugs, I sgraffito carve all their little faces and every face looks just a little bit different and they all look just so cute. And people love them, and I love them because raccoons are super cute and they have been a joy to make for me.
