In this episode, I talk to Su Butcher who trained as an architect and managed three successful architects’ practices during the ‘90s and noughties. She also managed the first-year design studio at the University of Liverpool School of Architecture from 1992-95 whilst taking a PhD in Architectural Education.
Su’s then setup her own consultancy which offers strategic help to construction product companies who want to communicate better with architects, particularly using digital tools. She also advises contractors, consultants and professional associations, and she writes, trains and speaks about technical construction topics and social and digital media in construction.
We talk honestly about:
- How she got into the architecture profession.
- The taboo subject of 'hobby' vs 'business'
- What she learned from running three architectural practices for 15 years.
- The status of architects in the construction industry and why it's like that.
- Why women are paid less than men.
- Why she has been able to meet so many architectural staff who have been abused, are in debt or both?
- Why architects don't get paid enough and how to change that.
- Why most architects' practices are so small (and unprofitable).
- What she would do for the profession if she had a magic wand...and much more.
