• Welcoming you back and setting up the Scripture Memory Review format
• Reading Romans 8:9 and making simple observations
• Studying the word “live” and what it means to dwell or reside
• Connecting cross references on what dwells within us
• Breaking the verse into phrases to make memorizing easier
• Practicing active memorization through repeated read aloud review
• Reflecting on what our “house” looks like if God dwells within

Holiday stress has a way of exposing what’s already simmering underneath: unmet expectations, quiet comparison, and the feeling that what we have is not enough. We sit down with Rebecca and Cassie from Shepherd Scripture Sisters for a candid conversation about Christian contentment and gratitude, and why discontentment and unthankfulness can feel so “normal” that we stop calling them what they are. From motherhood overwhelm to job frustration to relationship pain, we talk about how these heart patterns show up in real life, not just in theory.
We also slow down and get biblical. We unpack why contentment is something we learn over time, why Scripture gives us permission to lament honestly, and what Paul means in Philippians 4 when he points to the “secret” of being steady in both plenty and need. We wrestle with a huge question: how do we give thanks in every circumstance without pretending the circumstance is good? Along the way, we touch on comparison and social media, the pressure of the holiday to-do list, and why grief and gratitude can exist together.
You’ll walk away with simple, practical ideas you can start this week: highs, lows, and arrows at the table, writing down three gratitudes, praying while you do the tasks you usually grumble about, and using scripture memory to take your thoughts captive when you feel yourself spiraling. If this conversation helps you, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs encouragement before the holidays, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show.

We dig into Romans 8:8 and let one blunt word do its work: “cannot.” We study what it means to be controlled by the flesh, then practice a repeatable method to memorize the verse out loud.
• how the Scripture Memory Review format works and how to follow along
• observations from Romans 8:8 with a focus on the word cannot
• Greek sense of cannot as not able and lacking power
• cross references that clarify how cannot functions in Scripture
• commentary insights from John MacArthur on the unbeliever’s inability to please God
• Constable’s nuance on believers walking according to the flesh
• guided memorization practice with repetition and speaking aloud

Your mind is never just background noise. It’s either leaning toward God or pushing back, and Romans 8:7 names that resistance with unsettling clarity: “the mind of the flesh is hostile to God.” I’m Alicia Luther, and today we take one short verse and treat it like it matters, because it does. We slow down, observe the text, and pay attention to what Paul is actually saying about submission, authority, and why the flesh can’t simply be coached into obedience.
We also do a focused word study on “hostile,” tracing the meaning of enmity and opposition, then we let Scripture interpret Scripture through cross references. You’ll hear how Luke 23:12 uses “enmity” in a real relationship, how Ephesians 2:15–16 describes Jesus “killing the hostility” through the cross, and how James 4:4 warns that friendship with the world can become enmity with God. All of it strengthens the core contrast in Romans between walking according to the flesh and walking according to the Spirit, and it gives real language for the internal battle so many believers feel.
Then we move into a practical Scripture Memory Review you can repeat anytime, using the Berean Standard Bible or any translation you prefer: listen as I read Romans 8:7 three times, then say it out loud ten times. We close with a simple gut check: does this verse make you agitated or anxious, and what can you do today to refocus your mind by reviewing what you’ve already memorized in Romans? If this helps you, follow or subscribe, leave a review, and share the episode with a friend who needs it.

It’s a good habit to start asking questions as you start to memorize a verse. The best way to do this is by asking the 5W’s and H. If you're listening to the podcast, you can find the questions in the show notes.
