But for athletes who make it to the other side, those individuals who compete all the way from infancy in the discipline to graduation in high school, they often see a payoff that's rewarding in more ways than one. 

And it's importance ultimately signifies something bigger at the AAU Junior Olympic Games: It forms the bedrock for what will become of the week.
