One of the most striking industrial sites I have explored! The turbine hall houses bold blue and green machines. Three levels above sits the near pristine control room, with a yellow central console, long rows of panels in banks in front and behind it.
Plans for the plant began in the early 20th century but stalled due to technical and financial issues. Work stopped completely during the First World War. After the war, coal shortages across Europe led to renewed interest in hydropower. Finally construction moved ahead. The plant opened in the early 1920s with one turbine and added a second soon after. Further upgrades followed, including major upgrades and renovation in the 1950s.
A newer hydroelectric site eventually replaced it, and this plant closed about a decade ago.
