From 1936 to 1939, brave patriots from all over the world joined in the struggle to safeguard the Spanish Republic and democracy against the Hitler-Mussolini backed General Francisco Franco. In the United States, the volunteers, which were sourced and led greatly by the CPUSA but also included anti-fascist fellow travelers, made up the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.
