In the battle of Thermopylae where the 300 Spartans along with a few thousands Greeks withstood the 70,000 – 100,000 Persians is the stuff of legends and has inspired many armies to face the odds and win. Gideon had 300 and faced the Midianites and Amalekites who were as numerous as locusts – God gave him a strategy to advance and win in spite of what he had. Let’s look at some of the reasons for Abraham’s success in war and why he and Sarah were called a father and mother of faith and of nations.

He attacked the armies of three nations with 318 trained servants

Gen 14:14  Now when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were born in his own house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.

Gen 14:15  He divided his forces against them by night, and he and his servants attacked them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus.

Gen 14:16  So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people.

Abram Blessed by Melchizedek

Gen 14:18  Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High.

Gen 14:19  And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth;

Gen 14:20  And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all.

Revelations of your Faith Victory in the Names of your Enemies:

Look at the names of the Kings Abraham was willing to face with his hired servants – he was I the midst of a battle with several nations and added his servants to the fight – but they were trained by him and therefore achieved a specific objective, the recovery of Lot and his goods when the Kings of Sodom an Gomorrah had fled the battle.

Enemy kings have names that give you the winning signal of faith to pursue and recover all:

God rebukes and chasten the lion-like devil who walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.

Chedorlaomer = “handful of sheaves”

Elam = “eternity”

Speaks of the harvest and salvation of souls for eternal life!

Tidal = “great son”

Of nations and swarm of locusts that eat up your produce

You will defeat the great sons and chiefs of nations that seek to devour your people and goods.
