The Serenity Prayer is one of the most well-known prayers in recovery circles and in pop culture. The who prayer hinges on the idea of Acceptance, a concept which has been loved, applied, and practiced as well as being misunderstood, abused and sharply contended. What is a healthy understanding of acceptance? What are unhealthy ideas masquerading as acceptance? How can a practice of acceptance enhance or befuddle a therapy process?
Rhys Pasimio interviews Nathan Fordham about these and other questions. Together, they draw on their shared experience of addictions counseling to unpack the clinical implications surrounding Acceptance and the Serenity Prayer. In particular, they explore how people with privilege can talk about acceptance with people lacking privilege, without causing more harm.
