Act 1 - The Conquering Republic

Listen Later

This omnibus episode is a compilation of Act I - The Conquering Republic, charting the Roman Republic's meteoric rise to global supremacy and the internal rot that followed its greatest victories.

The story begins in 146 BC, at the height of the Third Punic War. Rome has achieved the unthinkable: the total annihilation of its rival, Carthage. But as gold and slaves flood into the city, the "spine" of the Republic—the smallholder farmer—begins to snap. Wealth beyond measure is concentrated in the hands of the few, while the veterans who bled for Rome return home to find their lands stolen by the elite.

Enter the Brothers Gracchi. From the quiet gardens of their mother Cornelia, two of the most brilliant and tragic figures in history emerge to challenge the status quo. First Tiberius, and then his younger brother Gaius, risk everything to restore the soul of Italy. They reach for the law to protect the dispossessed, only to find that the law is a thin veil easily shredded by the Senate's fury.

In this Act 1 Omnibus:

  • The Fall of Carthage: Witness the final, brutal end of the Punic Wars and the birth of a new superpower.

  • The House of Cornelia: Go inside the world of the woman who raised the men who would nearly topple the Senate.

  • The Rise and Fall of Tiberius: The idealistic quest for land reform that ended in the first great political assassination of the Republic.

  • The Revolution of Gaius: The high-stakes escalation of a younger brother determined to finish the work, leading to a desperate flight and a final curse in the Grove of the Furies.
