Jonathan "John" Wick, born Jardani Jovonovich (Джарданы Джовонович) and also known as Baba Yaga so they wanted to give their character a catchy nom-de-guerre - and since the antagonists of the movie are represented by the Hollywood Russian Mafia (again), they used a Russian mythical figure as that callsign.
