Remember the ancient prophet Jonah? God initially spoke to him first to go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, but Jonah rebelled and ran away from this assignment. Because Jonah ignored God speaking to him, Scripture then records that God spoke through circumstances to get Jonah’s attention. Look at the following unfolding events God used to speak: A great wind in the sea, a violent storm, a huge fish that swallowed Jonah for three days and three nights and then the fish spit Jonah up on dry land. Jonah recognized God speaking to him through all of these circumstances and then proceeded to fulfill his original assignment.

God is always speaking through the natural realm around us and one of the ways He uses to get our attention is through our circumstances. The prophet Isaiah tells us it is our responsibility to perceive what God is speaking through the natural realm around us.

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

Isaiah 43:19
