I think most of us seeking God’s voice want Him to speak loud and demonstratively like the rushing wind, the earthquake, and the fire. Make it loud and clear so I can’t miss it! God can speak in that way, but He is most often found in the still small voice. Many times, this still, small voice is less perceived with the ears and more heard with the heart. In the same way that we learned to trust God-inspired imaginations and impressions we must learn to discern God’s inner voice to our hearts.

We see the kindness of the Lord to Elijah in the story found in I Kings 19 on Mount Horeb. Elijah was feeling discouraged and dejected and the Lord didn’t speak to him in a loud, spectacular, ‘blow you out of the water’ way like He often did with Moses. No, he knew where Elijah was personally and in His kindness, He came in a gentle voice. Have you ever had a conversation with someone who is whispering or speaking softly? What usually happens in that exchange? You have to get closer to them so you can hear them more clearly. To me, this is often how I hear God speak to me in the internal realm. It’s kind, gentle, and almost whisper-like, which compels me to draw closer to Him to hear what He is saying.
