Befriending the Bible

Acts of the Apostles 7 (Acts 15-17):The Decision for the Gentiles; Paul's Second Missionary Journey

Listen Later

Acts 15 is a watershed moment in Luke's narrative journey with us. The Jerusalem Jewish leaders of the Jesus movement formally decide to incorporate Gentile Jesus followers into the movement. This cements the welcome which Jesus members must have to non-Jews. The decision, with certain restrictions, is communicated back to Antioch and is received warmly. Paul undertakes his second missionary journey with Silas and Timothy (15.36f), travelling overland to the places visited earlier and then is invited to journey to Europe (16.9-10). He preaches in Philippi (16.11-40), Thessaloniki (17.1-9), Beroea (17.10-14) and finally Athens (17.15-34). With Paul in Athens conversing with its philosophers and attracting adherents, the Gospel has now reached one of the major cultural centres of the ancient world.
