Adultery, marriage, pornography, and sexuality. Attitudes have certainly changed about these topics.
Why was a law about not committing adultery so central to the well-being not only of families but of society? Why did Jesus push the idea further and say that even looking at a woman with lust means committing adultery in your heart? Isn't that a little severe?
This sermon explores the seventh commandment in Exodus 20:14 and also Jesus' challenging words in Matthew 5:27-30.
Things have radically changed. The world's three most popular pornography websites have 5.81 billions visits monthly. The largest exploits children. Addictions and mental health issues are on the rise. Families are breaking down. It's the public health emergency that no one wants to discuss.
After unpacking the text, the sermon suggests four applications, including two very practical and helpful resources, what it means to take every thought captive to Christ, and a strong word about the forgiving grace of Jesus for those who feel trapped, guilty, ashamed, and know things have gone awry.
One thing is for sure. Thoughts are coordinates. And Jesus can help.
