आवारा

1951 में रिलीज़ हुई फिल्म आवारा जटिल कथानक व कहानी के कठिन मोड़ों वाली एक मर्मस्पशी कहानी थी और यह फिल्म विश्व भर में अत्यंत सफल रही| लोकप्रिय युगल राजकपूर व नर्गिस अभिनीत इस फिल्म ने रूस व चीन में आशातीत सफलता पाई और टर्की में तो इसका स्थानीय रूपांतर तक बनाया गया ! इसे कान फिल्मोत्सव 1953 में ग्रांड पुरस्कार के लिए नामित किया गया परंतु वहाँ यह हेनरी – जेओर्जेस क्लूजों की फ्रेंच थ्रिलर ‘द वेजिस आफ फियर’से परास्त हो गई|

आवारा में समाज के विभिन्न वर्गों के बीच खाई को नर्गिस के किरदार रीटा व राज कपूर के किरदार राज के संबंधों के माध्यम से दिखाया गया है| राज के पिता एक धनाढ्य जज थे, परंतु जब उसकी माँ गर्भवती हुई तो उसके पिता ने चरित्रहीनता का आरोप लगाते हुए उन्हें घर से निकाल दिया| राज का पालन पोषण असीम दरिद्रता में हुआ, अतः वह बड़ा हो कर एक चोर व बदमाश बना| उसकी मुलाक़ात रीटा से स्कूल में ही हो गई थी परंतु गरीबी के कारण काम में माँ का हाथ बंटाने के लिए उसे स्कूल छोड़ना पड़ा| दोनों अलग हो जाते हैं| पुनः दोनों सालों बाद मिलते हैं जब राज एक आवारा बन चुका है| जब उसे अपने पिता के द्वारा किए गए अन्याय व अपनी असली पहचान के बारे में पता चलता है तो वह क्रोध में किसी का कत्ल कर बैठता है| उसका केस उसी के पिता की कोर्ट में आता है, और उसकी प्रेमिका रीटा उसका बचाव करती है|

इस फिल्म का संगीत शंकर जयकिशन ने तैयार किया और मुकेश द्वारा गाया इसका एक गीत ‘आवारा हूँ’ अत्यंत लोकप्रिय हुआ| यहाँ तक कि देश के बाहर चीन व रोमानिया में भी इसके चाहने वाले थे| पर्दे पर नर्गिस व राज के बीच की महान केमिस्ट्री (युगलबंदी), व सामाजिक वर्गीकरण एवं अनुक्रम पर उठाए गए वैध सवालों की वजह से आवारा एक चिरस्थायी व विचारोत्तेजक सिने-कृति बन गई है|

AWAARA ("The Tramp")

A poignant tale rife with intricate plot connections and twists, Awaara was released in 1951 and became an international success. Starring the rousing onscreen pair, Raj Kapoor and Nargis, Awaara was a hit movie in both the Soviet Union and China and was popular enough to warrant a remake in Turkish cinema. It was nominated for the Grand Prize at Cannes in 1953 but lost to "The Wages of Fear," a French thriller by Henri-Georges Clouzot.

Awaara highlights the class divide that exists, both through the relationship of Nargis' character, Rita, and that of Kapoor's, Raj. Raj belonged to an upper class family, but his pregnant mother was cast out by his father, a judge, for perceived infidelity. Raj is thus born in poorer circumstances and the environment that he grows up in shapes him to be a thief and scoundrel. He meets Rita in school, and unable to continue as he has to work to support his mother, they are separated. They meet again years later when Raja has grown into his role as a tramp. Upon discovering the treachery and injustices surrounding his true lineage, Raj commits murder. He is brought into his actual father's court and he is defended by his lover Rita.

The soundtrack was created by Shankar-Jaikishan, and the hit song, "Awaara Hoon" sung by the renowned Mukesh had cross-border appeal, finding fans from China to Romania. The legendary chemistry between Nargis and Kapoor, along with the valid questions posed about class and hierarchy, make Awaara an enduring and evocative piece of cinematography.
