Most of his work was in the field of polarography.
He received the Nobel Prize in 1959 for “his discovery and development of the polarographic methods of analysis.”
He was born in 1890 in Prague, the son of a Roman Law professor.
He began studying chemistry, mathematics, and physics in 1909 at Charles University in Prague.
Then he went on to London’s University College where he studied between 1910 and 1914.
During World War I he was the dispensing chemist and also the radiologist at a military hospital.
During the war he continued to study and earned his Ph.D. in 1918 and his Doctorate in 1921.
He started working under Professor B. Brauner at the Institute of Analytical Chemistry at Charles University.
In 1922 he was promoted to Associate Professor, and then in 1926 he became the institute’s first Physical Chemistry Professor.
He invented the polarographic method in 1922 and then focused the rest of his scientific studies on developing electrochemistry, which was a new branch.
He built a school of polarographers at his university and led continued research into polarography.
In 1950 he was appointed to be the new Polarographic Institute’s director.
Two years later the institute became part of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences.
Heyrovsky married Marie Koranova in 1926, and they had two children together.
