Šternberský palác je jednou z nejvíce rozpoznatelných barokních památek v České republice.

Základy paláce navrhli okolo roku 1697 hrabě Václav Vojtěch se svojí ženou Klárou z Maltzanu.

V roce 1811 palác zakoupila od Leopolda ze Šternberka Společnost vlasteneckých přátel umění.

Dalších osm let probíhaly rozsáhlé renovace, protože se organizace připravovala na výstavu.

V roce 1814 se poprvé otevřely dveře pro veřejnost. Společnost zde prezentovala své sbírky.

V roce 1871 koupil palác od Společnosti vlasteneckých přátel umění Heliodor Heidl.

Ten ho pak následující rok prodal další organizaci Spolku paní a dívek sv. Anny.

Tato organizace začala provozovat to, co někteří nazývali „Ústav idiotů," jenž byl podle předsedkyně spolku Ernestiny Auersperkové nazván Ernestinum.

Toto zařízení sloužilo jako blázinec až do roku 1919, kdy si ho přivlastnila armáda, která zde během první světové války zřídila proviantní školu.

Poté, co byl Spolek paní a dívek sv. Anny zrušen, připadlo vlastnictví paláce Kongregaci školských sester III. řádu sv. Františka Serafínského, ale ti ho nikdy nevyužívali, protože zde stále byla armáda.

Po druhé světové válce začala Národní galerie s jeho renovací a používala ho pro své výstavy.

Dnes jsou ve Šternberském paláci převážně umělecké výstavy.

Národní galerie zde vystavovala nějaký čas sbírku mistrovských děl rakouského a německého malířství 19. století a také sbírku evropského umění od 14. do 18. století.

The Sternberg Palace is one of the Czech Republic's most recognizable baroque landmarks.

The grounds of the palace were designed at some point after 1697 by Count Vaclav Vojtech and Klara of Maltzan, his wife.

In 1811 the palace was purchased from Leopold of Sternberk by the Society of Patriotic Friends of Art.

For the next eight years, extensive renovations were carried out there as the organization prepared it for exhibition.

In 1814, the society first opened the doors to the public to showcase its collections.

Heliodor Heidl purchased the palace from the society in 1871.

He then sold it the following year to another organization—the St. Anne Ladies and Girls Association.

The organization then commenced running what some called the "Institute for Idiots," which was named the Ernestinum after the organization's then-chairperson, Ernestina Auersperk.

The facility served as an insane asylum until 1919 when the military commandeered it for use as a commissary school during World War I.

After the St. Anne Ladies and Girls Association was abolished, the Congregation of Scholastic Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis Serafino took ownership of it, but they never used it because the military was still stationed there.

After World War II, the National Gallery started renovating and using the palace for its exhibitions.

Today the exhibitions at Sternberg Palace are mostly artistic in nature.

The facility housed the National Gallery's collection of Masterpieces of 19th Century Austrian and German Painting for some time, as well as the gallery's collection of European art spanning from the 14th to the 18th centuries.
