Hardeknud tog over England, da Harold Harefoot, hans halvbror, døde.
----Formal English----
Harthacnut ruled Denmark between 1035 and 1042 and England between 1040 and 1042.
He was England’s last Danish king, and he struggled to hold on to all of the land his father, King Cnut the Great, had ruled.
Cnut ruled Denmark, England, and Norway, but at his death, Magnus I took Norway while Harold Harefoot took England.
Harthacnut took over England when Harold Harefoot, who was his half-brother, died.
After Harthacnut’s death in 1042, Magnus took over Denmark as well.
When Harthacnut came to the throne of Denmark in 1035, he was known as Cnut III.
At that time, problems in Denmark prevented him from going to England, so he agreed that Harold Harefoot should be his regent, although most in England considered Harold to be their king because Harthacnut did not visit England.
When he finally did sail for England in 1039 with the intent to invade the country and take it from Harold, he held off because he found that Harold was sick and close to death.
After Harold’s death, he was invited to take the throne of England, although he went in with a military force just in case opposition arose.
Historical accounts of what happened during Harthacnut’s reign are a bit questionable and appear to conflict in some places.
Because of obscure details in these accounts, historians have come to interpret them in various ways.
Most records from his day, however, suggest that he was not very well liked and that he didn’t do anything that was very kingly.
His mother Emma apparently played a key role in his attempts to gain England’s throne.
