آصف علی زرداری نے سال 2008 اور 2013 کے دوران پاکستان کے گیارہویں صدر کے طور پر خدمات انجام دیں۔

انہوں نے 1987 میں بینظیر بھٹو سے شادی کر لی، اور آئندہ سال وہ وزیرِ اعظم منتخب ہوئیں، جس سے وہ پاکستان کے جنٹلمین اوّل بن گئے۔

ان کی بیوی کے وزیرِ اعظم بننے کے دو سال بعد اس وقت کے صدر غلام اسحاق خان نے انہیں اور ان کی بقیہ انتظامیہ کو برطرف کر دیا، جس کی بڑی وجہ زرداری کی بے جا مداخلت تھی جو اس کی ناکامی کا باعث بنی۔

1993 میں بھٹو کے دوبارہ منتخب ہونے کے وقت زرداری وفاقی سرمایہ کاری کے وزیر اور پاکستان انوائرنمنٹل پروٹیکشن کونسل کے چیئرمین بنے۔ اس عرصے کے دوران زرداری اور ان کے برادرِ نسبتی مرتضٰی میں مخالفت پیدا ہو گئی، اور کہا جاتا ہے کہ 1996 میں پولیس نے مرتضٰی کو قتل کر دیا۔

ایک ماہ بعد بھٹو کی انتظامیہ دوبارہ برطرف کر دی گئی اور ان کے شوہر کو گرفتار کر لیا گیا اور ان پر قتل اور بد عنوانی کے الزامات لگائے گئے۔

اپنی قید کے باوجود 1997 میں قومی اسمبلی کی ایک نشست پر منتخب ہونے کے بعد وہ برائے نام حیثیت سے بطور رکنِ اسمبلی خدمات سر انجام دیتے رہے۔

2004 میں انہیں قید سے رہا کر دیا گیا لیکن انہوں نے ملک سے باہر دبئی میں رہنے کا انتخاب کیا۔

2007 میں اپنی بیوی کے قتل کے بعد وہ پاکستان لوٹ آئے۔

آئندہ سال وہ صدر منتخب ہوئے اور بہت سے مجرمانہ الزامات بھی ان سے ہٹا دیے گئے۔

ہر جگہ عوامی ناپسندیدگی کے باوجود افغانستان میں جنگ میں انہوں نے ریاست ہائے متحدہ کا ساتھ دیا۔

ان کا عرصۂِ صدارت ختم ہونے تک ان کی تائیدی درجہ بندی بہت گر چکی تھی اور گیارہ فی صد کی تنزلی تک پہنچ چکی تھی۔

جن تنازعات نے ان کی انتظامیہ کو بدنام کیا ان میں ان کا سپریم کورٹ کے ججز کی بحالی روکنا، دہشت گردی کے خطرے کا بڑھنا اور پاکستان کو 2010 میں تباہ کرنے والے سیلابوں سے مؤثر طرح سے نہ نپٹنا شامل ہیں۔

Asif Ali Zardari served as Pakistan's eleventh president between the years of 2008 and 2013.

He married Benazir Bhutto in 1987, and she was elected prime minister the following year, making him Pakistan's First Gentleman.

Two years after his wife became prime minister, then-president Ghulam Ishaq Khan discharged her and the rest of her administration, mainly due to Zadari's involvement in the improprieties that led to its breakdown.

At the time of Bhutto's reelection in 1993, Zadari became federal investment minister and the chairperson for the Pakistan Environmental Protection Council.

During this time, antipathy arose between Zadari and his brother-in-law Murtaza, and in September 1996, police were said to have killed Murtaza.

One month later, Bhutto's administration was dismissed again, and her husband was arrested and indicted on charges of murder and corruption.

Despite his incarceration, Zadari still served in a nominal capacity as a parliamentarian after he was elected to a seat in the National Assembly in 1997.

He was released from prison in 2004 but chose to expatriate to Dubai.

After his wife's assassination in 2007, he returned to Pakistan.

The following year, he was elected president and also acquitted of a number of criminal charges.

He sided with the United States on the war in Afghanistan even though public disapprobation was prevalent.

By the time his presidency ended, his approval ratings had fallen extremely low, reaching their depths at eleven percent.

Among the controversies which marred his administration were his attempt to keep the Supreme Court judges from reinstatement, the growing terrorism threat, and the mishandling of floods that plagued Pakistan in 2010.
