इंदिरा गांधी

भारत की पहली महिला प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गांधी ने साठ और सत्तर के दशक से लेकर 1980 तक 15 वर्षों तक भारत का नेतृत्व किया| आज की तारीख तक वे दुनिया में सबसे लंबे समय तक बनी रहने वाली महिला प्रधानमंत्री हैं| एक दिलचस्प तथ्य यह है कि इंदिरा गांधी एकमात्र भारतीय प्रधानमंत्री हैं जिन्होंने आपातकालीन स्थिति की घोषणा की थी और संसद में अपने कार्यकाल के बाद जेल में बंद रही थीं| वे प्रथम निर्वाचित भारतीय नेता थीं जिनकी हत्या कर दी गयी और उनके बेटे राजीव गांधी की हत्या भी उनकी माँ के ग्यारह साल बाद संसद में रहते कर दी गई थी|

हालांकि उनका उपनाम गांधी हो सकता है, इंदिरा वास्तव में भारत के पहले प्रधानमंत्री जवाहर लाल नेहरू की बेटी हैं| मोहनदास करमचंद गांधी के साथ उनका कोई खून का रिश्ता नहीं है, जिन्हें महात्मा गांधी के रूप में भी जाना जाता है| उनका जन्म 1917 में हुआ था और उन्होंने भारत तथा इंग्लैंड के ऑक्सफोर्ड में समरविले कॉलेज में अध्ययन किया था| भारत वापस लौटने पर उन्होंने संसद में अपने पिता के कार्यकाल के दौरान उनकी अनौपचारिक निजी सहायिका के रूप में काम किया और उनकी मृत्यु के बाद 1964 में ऊपरी सदन (राज्य सभा) की एक निर्वाचित सदस्या बनीं|

प्रधानमंत्री के रूप में उन्होंने पड़ोसी पाकिस्तान के साथ 1971 के युद्ध, बांग्लादेश के निर्माण, भारतीय परमाणु हथियार कार्यक्रम की शुरुआत, भारत की हरित क्रांति, एक असफल गरीबी-विरोधी कार्यक्रम, तथाकथित बेईमान चुनाव प्रथाओं, भारतीय मुद्रा के अवमूल्यन और अमृतसर में स्वर्ण मंदिर पर चढ़ाई का नेतृत्व किया| वह एक सशक्त नेता थीं और भारत पर उनके प्रभाव को लेकर अभी भी विभाजनकारी भावनाएं उत्पन्न होती हैं| संसद में उनके कार्यकाल के बाद भारत की साक्षरता दर में सुधार आया, कृषि उत्पादन में काफी वृद्धि हुई और गरीबी 20% तक कम हो गयी थी| यह सिखों के पवित्र धार्मिक स्थल, स्वर्ण मंदिर पर उनका आक्रमण ही था जो उनकी मौत का कारण बना था| उनकी हत्या उनके सिख अंगरक्षकों द्वारा नई दिल्ली में उनके अपने उद्यान में कर दी गई थी| अस्पताल ले जाते समय उनके जख्मों के कारण उनकी मृत्यु हो गई थी|

INDIRA GANDHI

India's first female prime minister, Indira Gandhi, led India for fifteen years through the sixties and seventies up until 1980. To date, she is the longest running female prime minister in the world. An interesting figure, Gandhi has been the only Indian Prime Minister to declare a state of emergency and be incarcerated after her term in office. She was the first elected Indian leader to be assassinated, and her son Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in office as well, eleven years after his mother.

While her surname may be Gandhi, Indira is in fact the daughter of India's first Prime Minister, Jawharlal Nehru. She shares no blood relation with Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi. She was born in 1917 and studied in India and in England at Somerville College in Oxford. She worked as her father's unofficial personal assistant when she returned to India during his tenure in office, and after his death in 1964 she became an elected member of the Upper House (Rajya Sabha).

As Prime Minister, she presided over the 1971 war with neighboring Pakistan, the creation of Bangladesh, the start of the Indian nuclear weapons program, India's Green Revolution, a failed anti-poverty program, alleged dishonest election practices, a devaluation of India's currency, and the storming of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. She was a strong leader and still causes divisive feelings over her impact on India. After her time in office, India's literacy rate did improve, agricultural production increased greatly, and poverty did fall by twenty percent. It was her attack on the holiest Sikh religious site, the Golden Temple, that led to her death. She was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards in her own garden in New Delhi.
