1. As Christmas approaches we have now lit 4 advent candles, hope, peace, joy and love. We pray for those gifts to surround us in this season of celebration.

2. Take time to read Luke 1.39-45, noting any words that stand out as you read.

3. Mary and Elizabeth capture the sense of celebration at the coming of God’s Son into the world. Do you share their joy : if yes, what are you celebrating? If not, what is preventing you from enjoying God?

4. In a culture where women were viewed as lesser than men, Luke captures the equality of Jesus, bringing women out of the shadows and into centre-stage. How do Mary and Elizabeth as women, mothers and prophets challenge and encourage the church today?

5. Read Mary’s song in Luke 1.46-56. Note what she sees as being accomplished through the birth of Christ. How do we as a church share in this work? Can we give thanks and praise God even though much of this prophecy is still being worked out in our world?

6. Write your own poem or song of praise to God as you welcome Christ into your life again.
