In Episode 9 of 20 Minute Monarch, Pete and Chris begin their two-part exploration of Æthelred II — one of England’s most misunderstood rulers.
Part 1 focuses on the uneasy foundations of his reign. Æthelred comes to the throne in 978 as a child, following the murder of his half-brother Edward the Martyr. From the start, the kingdom is shaped by powerful figures around him — including his mother Ælfthryth — and by factional politics among leading nobles.
We then trace the growing wave of Viking attacks in the late 10th century, and the kingdom’s attempts to respond — militarily, diplomatically, and financially. This includes the early use of payments (later known as Danegeld), shifting strategies, and the increasing strain on royal authority.
Crucially, this episode stops just before one of the most controversial events of the reign — setting up Part 2, where decisions harden, consequences escalate, and the story takes a darker turn.
As always, Pete and Chris balance storytelling with source-based history, drawing on the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and modern scholarship to separate myth from reality.
