Listen Later

On today’s show:

0:08 – Tabul, the capital city of Afghanistan was recently overtaken by Taliban forces. Over the weekend, images of terrified Afghans scrambling to leave the city flooded news media. @MitchJeserich joins us to discuss the chaos, which marks the end of America’s longest war.

0:34 – Dr. John Swartzberg, clinical professor emeritus of infectious diseases at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health joins us for our regular COVID news segment.

1:08 – Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf has teamed up with California Governor Gavin Newsom to bring CHP to conduct more traffic stops in the city. We discuss with Mike Cheng, Reentry Manager at the Asian Prisoner Support Committee (@AsianPrisonerSC), Cheuk-Ning Li an Oakland organizer for the Asian Pacific Environmental Network (@APEN4EJ), and Brandon Martin, a research associate at the Public Policy Institute of California.

The Anti-Police Terror Project will stage a press conference at 1:30 pm today with the family of Erik Salgado — who was killed by the California Highway Patrol last June — to condemn the decision by Libby Schaaf and Gavin Newsom to bring in CHP to patrol Oakland’s streets.

1:34 – The Physicians for Social Responsibility have organized a national day of action tomorrow opposing the Enbridge Line 3 Pipeline. We discuss the health impacts of the pipeline as well as the brutal police tactics used against water defenders with Dr. Laalitha Surapaneni, (@LaaliMD) Assistant Professor of General Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School, @Jeff Ritterman, a retired cardiologist who serves on the Board of Directors of the SF Chapter of the Physicians for Social Responsibility, and Tara Houska (@zhaabowekwe), an Ojibwe tribal attorney and founder of @GiniwCollective.

The SF Chapter of the Physicians for Social Responsibility will engage in a solidarity protest tomorrow at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Headquarters in San Francisco.
