Kenya yesterday (Wednesday) deployed its first peacekeepers to the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo where local troops are fighting a rebel insurgency. Kenya's defence forces have been deploying logistical support systems since September in readiness for the planned operations against the M23 rebels. The contingent first mission will be recapturing the border city that was seized by the M23 in June. The east Africa community agreed on a troop deployment to combat rebels early this year. DRC has accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 group, Kigali has denied those accusations.
