Born Yolande Cornelia "Nikki" Giovanni Jr., Nikki Giovanni is a renowned writer, poet, educator and activist. Giovanni began with an influence from the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements and is a very accomplished writer from the Black Arts Movement. She was born in Knoxville, TN and lived in many places including Cincinnati, OH and Wyoming before returning to Knoxville to live with her grandmother. Just a few of her many awards include: Inducted into The Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent (1999), United States Senate Certificate of Commendation (2000), 2000 Council of Ideas, The Gihon Foundation (2000), Virginia Governor's Award for the Arts (2000), The Rosa Parks Women of Courage Award, first recipient (2001 and again in 2002) and The SHero Award for Lifetime Achievement (2002).
