The heroin economy has shaped the growth of coastal villages, border towns and megacities across East and Southern Africa. Ports and airports continue to be targeted by organized crime groups to traffic illicit goods.

This booming industry is enabled by unplanned and dysfunctional urbanization, migrating youth population, unemployment, weak governance, organized crime and widespread corruption among police and politicians in Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania and South Africa.
