Synopsis of After Dark by Haruki Murakami

After Dark is a surreal and atmospheric novel set in Tokyo over the course of a single night, from just before midnight until dawn. The story follows Mari Asai, a quiet nineteen-year-old college student who spends the night reading alone in a late-night diner. There, she meets Tetsuya Takahashi, a jazz musician who recognizes her from a past encounter involving her older sister, Eri. 
As the night unfolds, Mari becomes involved in a series of unexpected events. She is asked to help translate for a Chinese sex worker who has been violently assaulted at a love hotel. Through this experience, Mari encounters a variety of people who inhabit Tokyo’s nighttime world, including hotel employees, musicians, and troubled office workers. These interactions gradually draw her out of her isolation and force her to confront her own feelings about her family and identity. 
Meanwhile, Mari’s sister Eri remains trapped in a mysterious, unnatural sleep at home. As Eri sleeps, strange supernatural events occur around her, including visions involving an unplugged television and a shadowy figure watching from another realm. The novel alternates between Mari’s real-world experiences and Eri’s dreamlike, unsettling state, blurring the line between reality and fantasy. 
Throughout the night, Murakami explores themes of loneliness, alienation, human connection, and the hidden lives people lead after dark. The city itself becomes a character, revealing a world that exists beyond ordinary daylight routines.
