Laura Jane Grace originally pitched the concept for Transgender Dysphoria Blues as a fictional account of the experiences of a transgendered prostitute dealing with the various aspects of addiction and gender dysphoria. However, this was more than just a fictional tale to help her write, it was a way for her to start coming out as a trans person. What started as allegory became fact as she spent a few years transitioning into her new body and finding just the right bandmates to complete this gem of an album.
