On January twenty sixth, nineteen seventy two, twenty three year old flight attendant Vesna Vulović was working aboard JAT Flight Three Six Seven when the aircraft broke apart over Czechoslovakia. Twenty seven people died. Vesna was the only survivor. Guinness World Records recognizes her as having survived a fall of ten thousand one hundred sixty meters without a parachute.

She was discovered inside wreckage near the village of Srbská Kamenice with devastating injuries, including fractures to her skull, pelvis, legs, ribs, and spine. She initially suffered paralysis but eventually learned to walk again.

The official investigation attributed the aircraft's destruction to an explosion. Later alternative theories disputed parts of the official account, but Guinness continues to recognize Vesna's record.

In November nineteen sixty one, eleven year old Terry Jo Duperrault was sailing through the Bahamas aboard the charter yacht Bluebelle with her parents, brother, and younger sister. On the final night of the trip, she awoke to a violent event aboard the vessel. Hours later, Bluebelle was sinking and Terry Jo was alone.

She escaped onto a tiny cork float with no food, drinking water, or shelter. For more than three days she drifted beneath the sun before an officer aboard the Greek freighter Captain Theo noticed something almost invisible among the whitecaps.

Terry Jo survived the ocean. Only afterward would investigators begin establishing what had happened to the rest of her family.

In September nineteen eighty three, twenty three year old sailor Tami Oldham and her fiancé, Richard Sharp, left Tahiti aboard the yacht Hazana, delivering it toward San Diego. Both were experienced sailors. About twenty days into the crossing, Hurricane Raymond overtook them with enormous seas and hurricane force winds.

The yacht capsized. Tami was knocked unconscious, and when she woke, Richard was gone. Hazana had lost its masts, navigation electronics were damaged, and no radio call ever reached another vessel. Using a sextant, a recovered watch, a makeshift sail, and her sailing experience, Tami began navigating toward Hawaii.

She would spend forty one days alone at sea before reaching Hilo.

On May twentieth, nineteen ninety nine, twenty nine year old physician Anna Bågenholm was skiing with two colleagues near Narvik, Norway, when she fell headfirst through ice covering a mountain stream. Her body became trapped beneath the ice, but she found a small pocket of air and remained conscious for roughly forty minutes.

By the time rescuers freed her after about eighty minutes, she had suffered circulatory arrest and her core temperature had fallen to thirteen point seven degrees Celsius. Doctors at Tromsø University Hospital used cardiopulmonary bypass to slowly rewarm her blood, and her heart eventually began beating again.

Her recovery became an important example of why profound accidental hypothermia can sometimes change how doctors judge seemingly unsurvivable cardiac arrest.

In nineteen ninety four, Italian endurance athlete Mauro Prosperi entered the Marathon des Sables, a multiday race across the Moroccan Sahara. During a long stage, a severe sandstorm erased his visual references and separated him from the course. When the wind finally eased, Prosperi could no longer see runners, markers, or anything telling him which direction led back. The Marathon des Sables records that he remained lost for nine days and was eventually found more than two hundred kilometers from the official route.

Much of the detailed account of those days comes from Prosperi himself. He described sheltering in an abandoned desert shrine, struggling with severe dehydration, finding small sources of food and moisture, and eventually walking toward signs that might lead to people. A later Guardian interview describes his ordeal as lasting roughly nine and a half days.

What began as a competition became something completely different. Finishing no longer mattered. Finding another human being did.

On the night of March twenty fourth, nineteen forty four, twenty one year old RAF tail gunner Nicholas Alkemade was returning from a bombing mission over Germany when his Lancaster was attacked by a German night fighter and caught fire. His parachute was destroyed, leaving him with a choice between remaining inside the burning aircraft or jumping without one.

Alkemade fell approximately eighteen thousand feet. Fir trees and deep snow helped absorb the impact, and he survived with remarkably limited injuries before being captured by German forces. Investigators initially doubted his account until the aircraft wreckage and his burned parachute supported what he had told them.

His survival was not a technique, and certainly not something that could normally be repeated. It was an extraordinary collision of circumstance, terrain, and luck.

In June nineteen seventy two, the Robertson family was sailing across the Pacific aboard their schooner Lucette when the hull was struck and badly damaged by orcas roughly two hundred miles west of the Galápagos Islands. The vessel sank within minutes, leaving six people with an inflatable raft, a small fiberglass dinghy, and only limited emergency supplies.

As the days passed, drinking water and food became increasingly difficult to obtain. When their inflatable raft eventually became unusable, all six crowded into the tiny dinghy Ednamair and continued drifting toward Central America.

Thirty eight days after Lucette disappeared beneath the Pacific, another vessel finally saw them.

During the disastrous Mount Everest climbing season of May nineteen ninety six, American pathologist Beck Weathers became temporarily blinded high on the mountain and was caught outside when a violent storm descended. Other climbers eventually found him unconscious and severely exposed to the cold, and rescuers believed he could not survive.

Hours later, Weathers unexpectedly regained consciousness and somehow made his way back toward Camp Four. His survival came at enormous physical cost, including devastating frostbite injuries, but it also became one of the most remarkable episodes of the nineteen ninety six Everest disaster.

His story is not simply about surviving cold. It is about what happens when rescue decisions must be made with incomplete information in a place where helping one person can endanger several others.

In nineteen eighty one, twenty two year old Yossi Ghinsberg entered the Bolivian Amazon with three other travelers. Disagreements eventually divided the group, leaving Yossi and American photographer Kevin Gale traveling together on a homemade raft along the Tuichi River.

After losing control near dangerous rapids, the two men were separated. Yossi survived the river but found himself completely alone in the rainforest, without knowing whether Kevin was alive or where he had gone.

For roughly three weeks, hunger, flooding, injured feet, isolation, and increasingly desperate decisions reduced his world to one question: could he remain alive long enough for someone to find him?

On May twenty fifth, two thousand six, Australian mountaineer Lincoln Hall reached the summit of Mount Everest. During the descent, he became severely confused and incapacitated at extreme altitude, consistent with high altitude cerebral edema. Sherpas spent hours trying to help him before concluding that he had died and descending to protect their own lives as oxygen and daylight disappeared.

The following morning, another climbing team found Hall alive high on the mountain. Their members abandoned their summit attempt to stay with him while a larger group of Sherpas climbed upward to help bring him down.

His survival depended not only on his body enduring an extraordinary night, but on guides who had already tried for hours to save him, climbers willing to give up their own summit attempt, and a rescue team able to reach him in time.
