Been there, done that, literally have the t-shirt and still have more to give. Stalking your way into a friendship. You only get old if you're lucky. Ageism is the last acceptable bias. Being Gen X. Having to leave jobs off your CV to mask your age. Going after a job you once held and laughably being told they're looking for someone "more qualified". Too young, not enough experience, at the age of getting married or having children, too old, not the right experience—women constantly face something related to ageism in their careers. Working with rock stars and drug addicts give you special skills, including patience. We've come a long way, but it wasn't that long ago a woman couldn't get a credit card without her husband's co-signing/permission. The Age Discrimination Employment Act of 1967 offers protection to workers 40+ but does not provide for damages (call your Senators and Congress Reps!). Glennon Doyle's UNTAMED. Pink tax repeal and the power of a female legislature. Making sure that your diversity plan includes people over 50, especially BIPOC over 50. Not "growing out" of the F word, ballet flats in the mosh pit and getting riled up.
You can find Gia at GiaDeSantis.com, Twitter and Facebook. Her book contributions include CRIME AND PUNKISHMENT and FOR WHOM THE COWBELL TOLLS: 25 YEARS OF PAUL’S BOUTIQUE. Her forthcoming documentary is about RequestVideo. Keep tabs on that!
