Welcome back to the podcast.Today, we’re diving into a topic that affects nearly everyone who shops online: the explosive rise of AI-powered shopping scams. As artificial intelligence becomes more accessible and more capable, online fraud has evolved at a staggering pace — faster, smarter, and far more convincing than ever before. In recent years, online shopping scams have transformed from amateurish traps into highly sophisticated operations. And one factor stands at the center of this evolution: Artificial Intelligence. The most dramatic shift has been the sudden surge in fake retail websites. Early in 2025, the number of these fraudulent sites soared nearly eight-fold — a stunning 790 percent increase. What makes these sites so dangerous is how authentic they appear. AI tools are now capable of generating professional-grade layouts, polished branding, and even unique product images for items that don’t exist anywhere in the real world. To the average shopper, these websites look legitimate in every possible way.But the problem doesn’t stop there. Social media has become one of the most common gateways for online fraud. Scammers use AI-generated graphics and ads to promote irresistible offers — things like outrageous discount coupons, flash sales, or supposedly last-chance clearance events. They rely on urgency and emotional triggers, knowing that impulse can override caution.Another tactic that continues to fool consumers is the fake shipping-notification text. These messages often claim a delivery issue or an unexpected package arrival, tricking people into clicking malicious links. AI allows scammers to personalize these messages with uncanny accuracy, making them seem like they come from trusted delivery companies. And it’s not only digital deception. One of the more peculiar schemes is known as “brushing.” Random packages arrive at people’s homes — items they never ordered and never wanted. Behind the scenes, scammers use the confirmed delivery to create fake verified reviews, boosting the visibility of low-quality or fraudulent products. It’s a tactic that blurs the line between offline oddity and online manipulation. All of this paints a picture of a rapidly evolving threat landscape. AI has given scammers the ability to scale their operations, tailor their attacks, and exploit human trust at unprecedented levels.Fortunately, there are ways to stay safe. The first is to slow down and verify. Always check a website’s URL for irregularities, especially slight misspellings or unusual domain endings. Be skeptical of deals that play on urgency — “today only,” “last chance,” or “90 percent off” offers are often engineered to rush your decision. Research unfamiliar retailers before buying, and when it comes to charities, look for independent sources that confirm their legitimacy. Small moments of caution can prevent major problems later.Online shopping has never been more convenient — but it has also never required more awareness. Thanks for joining today’s episode. As AI continues to reshape the digital landscape, staying informed becomes one of our strongest defenses.
