In order to understand new things, sometimes we need to study old things.
I never really understood what my Army and Marine Corps friends meant by “strategic terrain.” As an Air Force officer, I have studied battles that took place at thirty thousand feet and bombing campaigns that, several miles into the atmosphere, overflew hundreds or thousands of miles of terrain, strategic or otherwise. We talked about strategic effects, but we didn’t talk about strategic terrain.
But then I visited Dover Castle on the south coast of England...
