The argument for AI is simple: for the first time, we have a tool powerful enough to wrap its head around the insane complexity of our planet's climate, allowing us to monitor and predict in real time. This isn't science fiction; AI is already on the front lines:

  • Stopping Deforestation: In the Brazilian Amazon, AI scans satellite data for tiny, telltale signs ("spider webs of illegal logging roads") that predict where deforestation is about to happen. In areas using this tool, the deforestation rate has plunged by a staggering 54%.

  • Saving Lives: The same idea is used to predict droughts in Africa, track changes in melting icebergs, and create incredibly accurate forecasts for floods and storms.

  • Building a Green Grid: AI is actively helping us build a greener future by optimizing complex renewable energy grids and even discovering new, energy-efficient materials.



This incredible power comes at a massive cost. The engine driving these solutions has a huge and growing appetite for energy. Climate advocates warn that to train and run powerful AI models, gigantic data centers are consuming electricity on the scale of entire cities. Because the demand is skyrocketing so fast, it is outpacing the rollout of renewables, forcing energy companies to fall back on fossil fuels. Projections show that by 2035, natural gas could be powering more than half of all data centers in the US. The very tool we hope will solve the crisis is on a path to become one of the next major drivers of carbon emissions itself.

The energy consumption isn't the only problem. AI is also set to turbocharge climate disinformation. With the click of a button, it can generate an endless stream of convincing but totally false articles, realistic images of fake protests, and social media posts tailored to sow doubt about climate science, making collective action much harder.



If AI is both potential savior and saboteur, where do we go from here? The answer is getting a lot smarter about how we build and use it. Research from MIT suggests that in our rush to build bigger models, we have forgotten to ask if the biggest model is always the best tool for the job. For predicting long-term global temperature changes, simpler models can actually work better and do so using just a fraction of the energy. We need to stop using a sledgehammer when a regular hammer will do.

We must stop thinking of AI as a magical savior or destroyer. It is an accelerator—an incredibly powerful engine that magnifies our human intentions and choices. Its ultimate impact on our climate will not be decided by the technology itself, but by us: our priorities, our policies, and our collective will. The only real question left is: What will we tell it to build?
