Artificial intelligence has become one of the most dominant topics in GovTech, but not every “AI solution” is built to solve a real government problem. Agencies are being asked to adopt tools before defining the need, establishing baselines, or preparing their teams for the operational lift behind the scenes.
In this episode, we take a grounded look at what is actually working in public-sector AI. We highlight examples from cities like San Jose and San Francisco and outline why the most successful pilots are narrow, measurable, and aligned with existing process improvements. We also discuss the growing risks of shadow IT, the importance of sustainable data governance, and the red flags that appear when vendors promise universal AI “fixes” without addressing workflows, training, or readiness.
AI can support modernization, but only when strategy leads. Government success still depends on strong processes, clean data, and intentional change management—because technology should accelerate what already works, not distract from what doesn’t.
