What becomes possible when we learn to meet the full spectrum of the masculine and feminine within us?
In this episode I sit down with Dan and Jenny Abdelnoor for a rich kōrero on the four quadrants of masculine and feminine energy - and how understanding each of them can bring greater harmony to our inner world, our relationships and the way we move through life.
We explore the many expressions of the masculine and feminine, the parts of ourselves we've learned to favour or suppress, and what happens when these energies begin to work together rather than against one another.
A deeply alive conversation about relationships, polarity, self-awareness and becoming more fully ourselves.
What we cover:
The four quadrants of the masculine and feminine, and the archetypes that live within the
Working with the light and shadow expressions of each quadrant
The suppression of the Wild Woman and Wild Man in the Western world
Weaving ascending and descending energy—and why we need both
Polarity, opposites and the feminine impulse to create, expand and multiply
How children naturally move between these energies
How air, fire, water and earth relate to the four quadrants

This might be one of the deepest wānanga we've ever had on Āio to date. Humbled and honoured to welcome teacher, mentor and friend Pā Shaquille Shortland to the podcast. Pā is an Indigenous knowledge holder from Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Terino and Te Orewai. He is a cultural leader and facilitator with more than 15 years of experience offering kaupapa Māori wānanga, reaching more than 25,000 people. This is a powerful exploration into mātauranga Māori, whakapapa and the vast world of Atua Māori.
Together we explore the whakapapa of mauri, the many forms and dimensions of mana, Hine-nui-te-pō and the origins of karanga, and the deeper meaning woven through the process of pōwhiri.
We journey into Tāne's role in the conception of humankind and the divine feminine woven through our whakapapa, the distinction between tikanga and ritenga, and the ways our creation stories continue to shape who we are as Māori.
Our kōrero also travels beyond this earthly realm — into the wider galaxy, the Atua connected to other planetary realms, parallels with Japanese understandings of Atua, and the preservation of ancient knowledge.
We close with a beautiful exploration of how we can begin to deepen our own relationship with Atua Māori.

There comes a moment in many of our lives when everything we thought was certain begins to unravel.
In this deeply personal episode, I step out from behind the interviewer's seat and into the hot seat myself. Joined by one of my besties, somatic and narrative therapist Robbie Fear, I share the story behind my year-long pause from Āio.
We explore the heartbreak of grieving a future that never came to be, navigating the end of a loving relationship, losing friendships, rebuilding community, and what it means to begin again when every foundation beneath you has shifted.
I also speak candidly about my journey with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), the impact it had on my mental health, and the practices, support and healing that helped me find my way back to myself.
This conversation is an invitation into the messiness of being human. It is about learning to use our voice, asking for what we need, embracing community, and trusting that even in seasons of uncertainty, something beautiful is quietly being rebuilt.
In this episode we explore:
My year away from Āio and why I stepped back
Living with PMDD and its impact on mental health
Grieving relationships and imagined futures
Conscious uncoupling and healing after heartbreak
Friendship, community and the courage to ask for support
Boundaries, authenticity and reclaiming your voice
Building a purpose-led business with integrity
Trusting the mystery and beginning again
Content note: This episode includes discussion of suicidal ideation in the context of PMDD. If you're moving through something similar, please listen gently and reach out for support if you need it.

TE AWA ATUA - Menstruation in the Pre-colonial Maori World By Ngahuia Murphy https://shorturl.at/ZPify FIND YOUR LIFE PATH NUMBER: 1. Write down your full date of birth in numbers (day, month, year). 2. Add each part separately (day, month, year) until each is reduced to a single digit or Master Number (11, 22, 33). 3. Add those three results together and reduce again to a single digit or Master Number. Example: 31 August 1986 • Day: 31 → 3 + 1 = 4 • Month: August = 8 → 8 • Year: 1 + 9 + 8 + 6 = 24 → 2 + 4= 6 • Total: 4 + 8 + 6 = 18 → 1 + 8 = 9 So, Life Path = 9.
In today's episode with Saoirse Connolly we are exploring Celtic Goddesses and the multifaceted nature of feminine energy. Saoirse is a powerhouse, heart-led with an embodied awareness of her ancestors walking alongside her.
She is a mother, mentor, activist, author and founder of House of Wild Publishing and Rebel Ma Collective. Born and bred in Dublin, Ireland, Saoirse, meaning freedom in Irish, carries the fierce spirit of her Celtic ancestors—storytellers, wisdom keepers and rebel women who were a stand for truth and fought for freedom.
This conversation is for anyone wanting to deepen their connection with Celtic Goddesses and the rise of the Divine Feminine. I know you'll feel moved, inspired, and maybe even activated by what Saoirse shares — her words carry the kind of truth that awakens something ancient in us all. This one lit a fire in my soul, a fire that was desperate to roar!

In this episode, we are joined by the powerful and poetic Ahi Nyx (Te Atiawa, Ngāti Raukawa, Mōriori), a takatāpui kairaranga (weaver) based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland). Ahi is a living vessel of mātauranga Māori who brings raranga back into our homes, our bodies, our communities — and into the healing of our identity.
Raranga, the sacred art of Māori weaving, is more than a craft — it is a portal to remember who we are.
Together, we enter Te Whare Pora, the spiritual house of weaving, and explore how raranga reconnects us to ancestral memory, gender fluidity, and the reclamation of our cultural birthrights. Ahi speaks into the complexities of tikanga, when it can be broken and when it must be upheld. We talk about how weaving can be both a personal and collective healing ritual, especially for takatāpui and those carrying intergenerational grief or disconnection from their whakapapa (lingiege).
This kōrero unravels what it means to protect our mana, to be a koha not a hōhā, and to stand strong in our truths even in the face of adversity.
Ahi's wānanga are a reclamation. Her presence is a protest. Her weaving is her karakia (prayer).
Whether you're Māori or tauiwi (foreigner), takatāpui or tāne (male), wahine (female) or non-binary — this episode will leave you inspired to pick up the threads of your own story, and start weaving them home.
What we cover:
What is raranga and why it's more than weaving
Te Whare Pora and the wairua (spirit) of creation
Working with manu (birds) & who can work with their feathers
Closed practices, cultural protocols, and breaking tikanga (protocols)
Weaving as identity healing for takatāpui and Māori
The truth about Māori shoes (yes, we had them!)
Gender roles in weaving — and how they're evolving
How to protect your energy and sovereignty as a creator
Holding sacred space for all identities at marae wānanga (workshops)
Standing strong in our truths in the face of adversity
